CIRA boldly states that it “<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>helps build a trusted internet for all Canadians“. Is that real or hubris?

There were issues with the last post.

Having run 2 surveys – 2019 and 2023 – the vast majority of members want CIRA to stick to its core mandate, to only mange the “.ca” registry.

FYI, NOMINET members threw out the Board and the CEO in 2021 as they didn’t listen to members.

    @ all candidates.

Q1. Do you think that CIRA should stick to its knitting – the core mandate?

Q2. If not, how will you ensure that proposed activity – e.g. kiwi.com – is not cross subsidized by the core mandate?

Q1. Do you think that CIRA should stick to its knitting – the core mandate?

Q1: Yes, I do think CIRA and the board should ensure that CIRA is the operator of the .CA ccTLD first.

Q2. If not, how will you ensure that proposed activity – e.g. kiwi.com – is not cross subsidized by the core mandate?

Q2: I believe you’re referring to the .KIWI and other TLDs that are being run today on Fury, the .CA registry system.

For me, CIRA’s core mandate is to be a registry operator. This could include operating infrastructure for other TLDs, as CIRA does today. Ultimately, the .CA registry also benefits from this infrastructure, as the technology cost is shared between operating a number of TLDs.

So, while I agree that this is something the board should keep an eye on while reviewing finances, I don’t see the risk you’re seeing here.

Staying true to the core purpose is critical. If we lose that, we lose our identity. That said, there are ways the CIRA can help Canadians navigate in the online world beyond registration and governance of domains.
