Welcome from David Mackey (Member Candidate)
Welcome to another CIRA Campaign Forum!
Participating in a CIRA election shows that you understand the importance of CIRA’s influence in Canada and on the global stage. You already know the Internet is an amazing global resource shared by billions of people. However, the challenge now is not just connecting billions of people around the world, or even connecting millions across Canada (although there’s still more work to do here). The most important challenge we now face together is how to create meaningful relationships between individuals on the Internet and to build trustworthy institutions that protect the rights and freedoms that we hold dearly. This is the opportunity where I believe CIRA must focus its attention for the benefit of all Canadians.
CIRA is uniquely positioned to understand how digital disruption impacts Canadians, but we need strong corporate governance at CIRA to show Canadians that CIRA, as a Not-For-Profit corporation, can be a trusted guide on important public conversations about the Internet, and to manage the .ca domain space in an open and transparent way.
CIRA has developed into a strong organization that does many good things, but there’s room for improvement. We need better member-to-member communication, better transparency and better accountability. CIRA’s growth-focused direction should not come at the cost of the board becoming disconnected from its members or worse building walls which keep members out. The cost of participating in a CIRA board election continues to rise and is now beyond the reach of most CIRA members. It doesn’t have to be this way.
The good news is the Internet gives us a low cost way of connecting with each other if we choose the right tools and if we choose to stay true to the bottom-up, open and transparent culture originating from the traditional innovative Internet technical community.
CIRA elections give us a chance to build the CIRA member community together. I’ve always valued teamwork. I have experience building teams and communities. I understand the challenges of balancing different interests and while still making progress moving forward with common goals. I believe a well functioning CIRA community serves the interests of all Canadians. Furthermore, a fully connected CIRA member community can be used as a model for how other Canadian organizations can engage with members to the fullest extent possible. Communities are built with the right leadership and the right culture.
Having participated in a number of CIRA Board elections as a member candidate, I’m delighted by the large number of conversations I’ve had with many of you in the past. I’m always learning about new CIRA Board issues in a changing environment. I wish to thank all who have voted for me in the past. As always I intend to continue to work towards making CIRA a better organization in the future.

I’m excited to be an active participant in CIRA’s 2023 campaign forum. I look forward to answering all your questions. This is one of the few times that CIRA members have a chance to exchange ideas and create a better Internet for Canada through conversation. Let’s make it a great conversation.
Good luck to all the other Member and Nominee Board Candidates!
Cheers!
David
